Eagle Valley East
Golf Course
Review
By Doug Saunders, golf writer
On the outskirts of Carson City, Nevada the distinctive green landscape of a golf course catches the eye as you drive along highway 50. This sprawling site is the home of the original golf venue in the region, Eagle Valley. While it may appear to be a typical main golf course, this city owned facility pleasantly surprises and pleases golfers who stop in.
The first surprise one finds at Eagle Valley is that it is much more than it seems from the road. This facility actually boasts two golf courses, The East Course, which opened for play in 1974, and the West Course, which was built in 1987. These two distinctly different golf courses come together to provide a full range of golf for players of all abilities. It is this collection of variety and challenge that continue to make the facility one of the most popular places to play in the area.
Upon entering the understated clubhouse the next impression is the greeting from a friendly and attentive staff that are willing to serve you. The final impression is your first glimpse of the healthy stand of grass that summons you to come and play here.
General Manager Jim Kepler has brought his years of expertise in the golf industry to play at Eagle Valley and works hard to make this facility serve the golfing community.
"We have made a lot of investments to improve our product and we feel that we offer one of the best values around. We are committed to making Eagle Valley an enjoyable experience for golfers of all levels," Kepler explained.
It is the contrast of the 2 golf courses that makes Eagle Valley so unique. The East Golf Course is an open tract, while the West Golf Course blends terrain change and strategy to provide a more demanding test.
The East Golf Course at Eagle Valley is the original layout and was built in 1974. The course is a classic parkland style course that plays across a gentle hillside. This open venue is a perfect course for beginning and intermediate players to learn on as the wide-open spaces make it difficult to lose a ball and allows for the pace of play to never get too stagnant.
The East Course features the basic setup of red, white, and blue tees with the course playing from 5980 yards to 6314 yards and at 6658 yards from the tips.
The par 72 layout has a benign slope rating of just 112 from the middle tees and is the perfect course for the beginning golfer, for juniors getting into the game, and for tournament groups that have a variety of players of different levels. Still the golf course gives a better player a chance to go out and grip it and rip it to his hearts content with little penalty for errant shots. "The East Course is an inviting layout with no intimidation factors. Better players also find this as a great course for working on their fundamentals" Kepler explained.
Consider the fact that the par 5's are less than 500 yards from the white tee and that the longest par 4 is 413 yards. These holes also feature few fairway bunkers and only two water features so that players can stay in their comfort zone throughout the course. The par 3's do offer a challenge with the 8th hole playing 193 yards long and the 12th hole stretching out to 197 yards from the white tees.
The close proximity of tees and greens also makes this a good walking course. Getting a bit more exercise while swinging the clubs is really how the game should be played and the East Course is perfect for that.
And all of this is available at a very affordable rate, making Eagle Valley Golf Courses worth a visit.
THINGS I LIKE - The East Course brings golf back to the basics of an open, walkable layout at an affordable price. A great place to bring the family and enjoy the day.
THINGS I DON'T LIKE - Players have been known to hit some wildly errant shots here so be aware of where golfers are at all times.
