Divine 9 courses preparing for spring play in March and April

Winter-season golf at the Divine 9 courses has been in full swing, with plenty of rounds already played through February. Now headed into late season play, spring golf is around the corner as the days get longer.

At Carson Valley Golf Course winter fees are in effect through March 11 with $30 rounds with a cart, $24 for 9 holes or $30 for unlimited twilight play after 2 p.m. After March 11 the spring green fees kick in, with $30 rounds of golf for walkers, $40 with carts or $20 and $26 for 9 holes and twilight fees begin at 3 p.m. for as many holes as you can play for $20 walking or $30 with cart. Junior golf season begins April 13.

The Lakes course at Genoa is in excellent shape. A round of golf at Genoa is running $49 for public play and $39 for locals. The Resort course is looking at an April 1 opening date. Spring golf rates haven’t been determined but we’re sure it will still be a bargain.

Meanwhile, Empire Ranch Golf Course continues its winter rates through March. Play the most golf for the best price, with 27 holes and a cart for $40 or $30 if you’re walking or play 18 holes for $30 with a cart or $15 if you’re walking.

Nestled against the beautiful Sierra Nevada in northwest Carson City, Silver Oak Golf and Event Center’s 18-hole championship course has ideal winter playing conditions. Their off-season rates continue through March, with Monday through Sunday green fees at $25 for 9 holes, $30 for 18 holes or $25 if you’re a member of the Acorn Club. Their 2013 spring green fee schedule will be announced soon.

Eagle Valley East and Eagle Valley West courses are experiencing ideal winter conditions with spring play officially beginning April 1. Winter rates for the east course are $30 for 18 holes with cart or $22 if you’re walking. The West course (18 holes and cart required) is $35.

Winter rates at Sunridge Golf Club continue through mid-April with spring rates kicking in April 15. Right now green fees are a bargain at $30 with a cart. Spring golf rates will continue to be a bargain at $35. Given Sunridge’s famed water holes and high desert doglegs, play always proves a challenge for golfers regardless of the season.

Dayton Valley Golf Club continues its winter season with green greens and sweeping fairways. The PGA Tour Qualifying Course is considered the most optimal course in Northern Nevada for winter play, which continues until April. Sunday through Thursday golf at Dayton is $30 a round and $35 on Fridays and Saturdays.

Empire Ranch Golf Course will host its annual Valentine’s Day dinner inside Mallards Restaurant. Lovers can treat themselves to a menu of savory bacon wrapped fillet, shrimp scampi, fresh squash medley, parsley potatoes and an elegant semi fredo with fresh berries for dessert. Cocktails begin at 5 p.m. with dinner served at 6 p.m. The cost is $35 per person. Reservations should be made by Feb. 7. Call (775) 885-1019.

Dayton Valley Golf Club is also planning a Valentine’s evening with dinner inside the clubhouse. Start with a a wedge salad with blue cheese, cherry tomatoes and bacon before moving onto the main course of bacon wrapped filet, fingerling potatoes, seasonal vegetable medley and dinner rolls. And make sure you save room for a personal red velvet cake for dessert.

Carson Valley Golf Course will host a Valentine’s tournament on Saturday, Feb. 16. A 10 a.m. shotgun start will kick off the day. $35 covers the golf, cart, $10 prize fund and soup. If you’re arriving to Nevada’s capital city for the holidays and plan to get a few rounds of golf, you’ll want to take in some of Carson City’s holiday attractions leading up to Christmas and New Year’s.

For holiday gifts for golfers, season passes and gift certificates are now available and for sale at Empire Ranch Golf Course, Eagle Valley Golf Course East and West, Silver Oak Golf and Event Center, Dayton Valley Golf Club and Sunridge Golf Club.

When the sun goes down, take a stroll through downtown Carson City and the State Capitol complex. Carson City has again brought out its best holiday lights including a fully illuminated Capitol Building. Afterwards, walk up and down Carson Street for holiday bargain shopping or grab a bite to eat at the many restaurants that line Carson City’s main street.

Cool weather and the holiday season, helped open the outdoor Arlington Square Ice Rink across from the Carson Nugget. Family skate nights are Tuesdays, 6-9 p.m. Regular skate sessions are Monday through Thursday, 3-9 p.m., Fridays, 3-10 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. and Sundays 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.

Strap on some blades and take a spin at the Arlington Square Ice Rink, open daily through the holidays.

The spirit of giving will be celebrated at the third annual Cookies with Santa benefit event for the Ron Wood Family Resource Center Saturday on Dec. 15 at Café at Adele’s. From 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., families are invited to snack on cookies, cocoa and cider, meet with Santa and provide for children in need in the community.

The Brewery Arts Center hosts the Christmas Time Art Show which runs daily through the end of the month. If you’re looking for last-minute gifts, this is the place. Nevada artists are showing fine art in paintings, photography, sculpture, pottery and glass. Shoppers looking for those special one of a kind gifts will be delighted with the art at the BAC Gallery.

Local potters will also feature their wares for holiday shoppers Saturday and Sunday Dec. 15-16 at the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada. Staff and students will be giving demonstrations and selling work for holiday purchases. The museum gift shop will have a one-day only sale, Saturday, Dec. 15 with 20% off for members and 10% off for non-members.  Admission to the sales are free.  Limited vender space still available. To close both days The Performing Arts Project of Northern Nevada will present “Christmas in Snowflake County — Hope in a Humble Stable” at 6:30 p.m.

Are you spending Thanksgiving in Carson City or Carson Valley? If it’s not snowing outside, chances are you can take in a round of golf in the morning and get in a nice Thanksgiving meal with family and/or friends in the afternoon. All Divine 9 courses will be open on Thanksgiving morning, weather permitting.

Carson Valley Golf Course - Get in the Thanksgiving spirit with the Carson Valley Turkey Shoot on Saturday, Nov. 10. A 10 a.m. shotgun will kick things off. There will be soup at the turn and you could win a turkey at the end! There will also be a Holiday Open House from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. where you can score early holiday deals. On Thanksgiving the clubhouse will open at 9 a.m. and rounds of golf will be available until 3 p.m. Golfers can take in 18 holes with a cart for $30 and $25 walking. Dayton Valley Golf Club - Saturday, Nov. 10 Dayton will host their “Beat the Pro Turkey Shoot” starting with a 10 a.m. shotgun.  If you beat the pro, you win a turkey. Dayton Valley will have Thanksgiving golf as well. Get in 18 holes with a cart for $35. The pro shop will be opened until 3 p.m. Reserve your Thanksgiving tee times as there are typically a good number of golfers out on this holiday. Empire Ranch Golf Course - Get in 9, 18, or try for 27 holes on Thanksgiving Day. Rounds start at $20 for 9 holes, $30 for 18 holes. Nearby Gold Dust West will be happy to have you for Thanksgiving dinner when you wrap up your game.

Genoa Lake Golf Course - Holiday golf begins early at the Lakes Course. Green fees are $60 for all-day play, $160 for foursomes. The cost includes a cart and range balls. Thanksgiving dinner is offered at nearby Casino Fandango inside the Rum Jungle Buffet or Duke’s Steakhouse for a more formal dining experience inside.

Silver Oak Golf and Event Center - Fuel up with a light breakfast inside the Cadillac Bar and Grill and get in 18 holes $35. Several Carson City restaurants will have a traditional Thanksgiving menu available for a warm meal post golf.

Sunridge Golf Club - Sunridge offers holiday golf for $30 a round which includes a golf cart. Sunridge is conveniently located to several restaurants that will have Thanksgiving options available.

Late fall and winter green fees kick in at Divine 9 courses

When it comes to golf and seasonal play, there’s no better place to tee it up than the courses in Carson City and Carson Valley. Sure it’s getting dark earlier and those early mornings and late afternoons may require a windbreaker, but that doesn’t take away the abundant sunshine and comfortable afternoon temperatures that lend themselves to challenging rounds. Divine 9 fall operation hours are underway, complimenting a nice welcome to your wallet with lowered green fees.

Carson Valley Golf Course – Early fall golf specials run through Nov. 4, with weekday 18-hole rounds $25 (walking) $35 (with cart). Friday through Sunday fees are $30 (walking) and $40 (with cart) for 18 holes. Late fall and winter green fees kick in Nov. 4. Since golf can be enjoyed year-round at Carson Valley, on those particularly brisk days, ask the pro shop about getting your cart fitted with an encloser. The covers brace golfers from the wind and cold air, while protecting against the elements.

Dayton Valley Golf Club – Fall and winter green fees at this Arnold Palmer-designed course are now in effect. Get in 18 holes with a cart for $30 a round Sundays through Thursday and $35 on Fridays and Saturdays. You can play until sun down. The restaurant and bar hours will vary depending on the weather, but chances are you’ll be able to get a beverage and something from the grill before you start playing and after you finish.

Eagle Valley Golf Courses – Tee times vary for both the east and west courses, with late fall and winter rates beginning soon. Rates for the East Course are $22 (walking) $30 (with cart) and $25 for members of the 50 Mile Club seven days a week. For the West Course green fees are $35 ($30 for 50 Mile Club members). “Like” the Facebook page for additional specials.

Empire Ranch Golf Course – Twenty-seven holes await at Empire Ranch and the late fall/winter rates begin Nov. 1. Get as much golf in as you can seven days a week. Walk 9, 18 or 27 holes for $15, $20 or $33; with a cart fees are $15, $30 and $40. After you’re done, head over to Mallards for Happy Hour specials and if you’re playing golf on Monday afternoon, stick around for Monday Night Football action with buffet and drink specials.

Genoa Lakes Golf Course – While the resort course is closed for the season, the Lakes Course is open and in terrific condition. Now through Oct. 31 green fees are $80 and $55 after 1 p.m. After Nov. 1 through Feb. 28 the cost drops to $60. Follow Genoa Lakes on Facebook for upcoming specials.

Silver Oak Golf and Event Center – Shoulder season green fees continue through the end of October at Silver Oak. Book a tee time and play 18 holes with a cart for $40 or $25 for 9 holes. Twilight golf is $25 for as many holes as you can play. Beginning Nov. 1 off-season green fees will run $30 for 18 and a cart. Ask the pro shop about the Acorn Club for added specials and reduced green fees. When you’re done, head over to Cadillac Bar and Grill for Happy Hour from 4 to 6 p.m., serving up 50 cent tacos and $2.25 margaritas.

Sunridge Golf Club – Sunridge offers early fall season green fees through Oct. 31. Monday through Thursday golfers can take in 18 holes for $30. Friday through Sunday, the cost is $40. Beginning Nov. 1 golfers can play every day for $30. All rates include a golf cart.

2nd Annual Golf Writer Contest Underway

Interested in becoming a golf writer? Perfect timing as “Hooked on Golf,” the game’s seminal radio show since 1994 on KNBR 680 in San Francisco, is partnering with courses in Carson City and Carson Valley to award a paid writing assignment to report on the Divine 9 Media Tour.

The Divine 9 Tour is 2 holes at 9 courses in 11 hours – and has been referred to by media as “a golf destination primer-on-steroids,” and “The Bataan Golf March.” It’s sun-up to sun-down, on the bus and off the bus, onto the courses and off the courses, with the threat of mental and physical exhaustion from the demands of play and verbal repartee. Well, it’s not that tough, what with a rolling lunch, various hydration opportunities – ice chest and awards dinner…

Drink breaks included.

So who might be the next Herbert Warren Wind, P.G. Wodehouse, Dan Jenkins, Jim Murray or John Updike? The person who can tell a story and spin a tale of their favorite golf trip – whether fun, funny, poignant, true or imagined. Entrants have until Friday, September 28, noon PST, to either submit a 200 – 400 word missive in writing, or email a smart phone video of 90 seconds or less.

A panel of judges will determine the winner to be announced during the radio program, Saturday, September 29, between 7:00am and 8:00am.

If you’re able to grip it and rip it on the golf course, can you do the same behind your laptop? For the winner the prize includes a $250 writing fee for a 500-word story, four nights lodging, media tour, two traditional rounds of golf at Divine 9 member courses, meals, helpful reporting tips from attending media pros, travel allowance and memories for a lifetime. The winner will be interviewed on the radio program with the written coverage living in infamy on “Hooked on Golf” and the Divine 9 websites. Photos and video will be included, so who knows, it could turn into a writing or acting career!

The winner will receive two nights lodging at either Carson Valley Inn or Holiday Inn Express Minden and two additional post-Tour nights to recuperate, along with two rounds of golf at Divine 9 member courses (a traditional 18 holes), $150 gas allowance, and select meals.

Football season celebrated inside the clubhouse

When you’re through taking a swing at any of the Divine 9 courses, saddle up to the bar, grab a beer or a cocktail, enjoy some appetizers and catch any number of college and NFL football games in the clubhouse.

Empire Ranch Golf Course – Monday night football action at Mallards begins at 5:30 with 10 TVs, a $12 full-on multi-course dinner buffet ($10 for seniors) and $2 domestic beer and $3 imports. The fun doesn’t stop there. Raffle prizes are given away during half-time and prizes include free rounds of golf, Empire Ranch golf hats, shirts, etc. Each customer gets two free raffle tickets for their chance to win. The same tickets will go into a jar and on Super Bowl Sunday and one lucky winner will get a free Empire Ranch season pass.

Mallards inside Empire Ranch Golf Course features a full-on dinner buffet during the Monday Night Football season.

Dayton Valley Golf Club – Fall golf and weekend football games dovetail nicely inside the clubhouse at Dayton Valley. Catch any number of games on four HDTVs, and a 14 JDL speaker system that provides stadium quality surround sound. Monday Night Football is highlighted at Dayton Valley with a $12 all-you-can-eat appetizer themed buffet featuring food native to teams competing. Getting in a round of golf requires plenty of nourishment before the game begins and after it ends. Divine 9 courses offer up a bevy of breakfast, lunch and dinner options at their respective snack bars and restaurants.

Here’s some dining options you’ll want to check out:

Carson Valley Golf Course

Serving breakfast and lunch from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Cottonwood Grill offers up eggs over easy in the morning and an array of burgers, sandwiches and all the fixing in the afternoons. For the golfer looking for something different during his lunch work hour, try out the Bucket Lunch. For $10 golfers get a large bucket of balls and a choice of lunch item on the grill’s menu.

Dayton Valley Golf Club

When you walk into The Clubhouse at Dayton Valley Golf Club you’re stepping into a setting steeped in classic country club ambiance. The Clubhouse features a large bar and grill area, outdoor patio and special banquet rooms. It is the perfect setting to enjoy a meal or favorite beverage with sensational mountain views or the sunset as a backdrop to the 9th & 18th greens. Dayton Valley also offers up choice menu options for banquets and special events.

Eagle Valley Golf Course

Whether you’ve gone the distance on the West Course or breezed through the East Course, you’ll definitely want to stop by the Eagle Valley Golf Course Bar & Grill. Here you’ll find the Sports Club, ideal for casual get-together or post-game micro-brews, sandwiches and appetizers. Part full-service lounge, part living room, golfers can relax in overstuffed couches and chairs and enjoy sports and news on nine TVs. Open daily 11 a.m. to dusk through October.

If you’re wanting a spectacular location for a private event, try The Supper Club Dining Room, also at Genoa Lakes Golf Club. Formerly known as Antoci’s, the Supper Club customizes dinner events that fits personal tastes and budgets.

At Genoa’s Resort Course you’ll find the Alpine Room, a mountain retreat with rustic, hardwood tables and stunning views of the snowcapped Sierra Nevada. Already a locals’ favorite spot, the Alpine Room is a bar that serves lunches and a wide array of appetizers, salads and sandwiches. Open daily 11 a.m. to dusk.

Silver Oak Golf and Event Center

Decorated with automotive memorabilia from the 1920s through the 1960s, the Cadillac Bar & Grill serves up traditional fare including an assortment of burgers, salads and sandwiches. Ask about their weekly lunch specials.

Sunridge Golf Club
