Arizona man wins golf contest with snake tale

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012

Bill Felcyn’s story about a practical joke among buddies on an Arizona golf course that involved a harmless snake, a six-foot rattler and a karmic turn of events won him entry to play in an epic Wild West golf tournament on Oct. 2 in Northern Nevada.

The 68-year-old retired salesman from Phoenix, Arizona, is the winner of the Divine 9 Media Tour writer’s contest, a paid golf writing assignment where he and other golf writers from around the West will play 18 holes of golf on nine courses in one day between Carson City and Carson Valley, Nevada.

Felcyn’s slithering “snakes on a golf course” tale was announced as the winning writing entry on the Sept. 29, 2012 “Hooked on Golf” radio program on KNBR 680 in San Francisco. Partnered with Divine 9, the offbeat writing contest asked hackers and scratchers from all walks of life to submit their best iPhone video or golf story written in 400 words or less.

Picked by a panel of “Hooked on Golf” judges as the best story among 34 entries, Felcyn’s snake story won him a $250 writing fee, four nights lodging, entry into the media tour, two traditional rounds of golf at Divine 9 member courses, meals, helpful reporting tips from attending media pros, travel allowance and memories for a lifetime.

He joined professional journalists and golf scribes from around the country, Oct. 2, for a most unusual writing assignment: the Divine 9 Media Tour.

A typical tee box during the Divine 9 Media Tour.

This Wild West golf outing, sponsored by the Carson City Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the Carson Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Authority has a shuttle full of media playing two holes at nine different courses in 11 hours.

A sun-up to sun-down round of golf and a nine course primer of challenging layouts coupled with regional history and colorful stories provides various angles for media to tell their audiences about Nevada’s Wild West attitude — where anything goes as long as they don’t frighten the horses. A bus packed with golf bags and a stocked ice chest will deliver the group to each Divine 9 course.

Eightsomes are common during play on two signature holes at all nine courses – most being par 3s over water and par 5s with forced carries to provide a memorable flavor of area golf.

Felcyn is no stranger to Northern Nevada golf. The 18 handicapper scored his best round ever of 82 at Divine 9′s Sunridge Golf Club in Carson City. He did it as part of a goal to play 52 rounds of golf in 2011. Of those rounds, he played on 42 courses in 11 different states. He said of the courses visited, Sunridge was his favorite because, well, it was the best score he’s ever carded.

During last year’s Divine 9 Media Tour, Sunridge was the home to the tournament’s first hole-in-one, scored by ESPN radio announcer Don Marchand on the par 3, 150 yard, 4th hole. Not trusting himself enough with a new golf ball over a water hazard, Marchand smacked a yellow practice ball with a six iron over the lake and into the hole. Will Felcyn answer Marchand back with an ace of his own? Will Felcyn beat his personal best round of 82? Stranger things have happened, especially during this tournament.

2nd Annual Golf Writer Contest Underway

Tuesday, September 18th, 2012

Interested in becoming a golf writer? Perfect timing as “Hooked on Golf,” the game’s seminal radio show since 1994 on KNBR 680 in San Francisco, is partnering with courses in Carson City and Carson Valley to award a paid writing assignment to report on the Divine 9 Media Tour.

The Divine 9 Tour is 2 holes at 9 courses in 11 hours – and has been referred to by media as “a golf destination primer-on-steroids,” and “The Bataan Golf March.” It’s sun-up to sun-down, on the bus and off the bus, onto the courses and off the courses, with the threat of mental and physical exhaustion from the demands of play and verbal repartee. Well, it’s not that tough, what with a rolling lunch, various hydration opportunities – ice chest and awards dinner…

Drink breaks included.

So who might be the next Herbert Warren Wind, P.G. Wodehouse, Dan Jenkins, Jim Murray or John Updike? The person who can tell a story and spin a tale of their favorite golf trip – whether fun, funny, poignant, true or imagined. Entrants have until Friday, September 28, noon PST, to either submit a 200 – 400 word missive in writing, or email a smart phone video of 90 seconds or less.

A panel of judges will determine the winner to be announced during the radio program, Saturday, September 29, between 7:00am and 8:00am.

If you’re able to grip it and rip it on the golf course, can you do the same behind your laptop? For the winner the prize includes a $250 writing fee for a 500-word story, four nights lodging, media tour, two traditional rounds of golf at Divine 9 member courses, meals, helpful reporting tips from attending media pros, travel allowance and memories for a lifetime. The winner will be interviewed on the radio program with the written coverage living in infamy on “Hooked on Golf” and the Divine 9 websites. Photos and video will be included, so who knows, it could turn into a writing or acting career!

Cut loose, break-free and let your inner golf writer take a swing at winning an all-expense paid trip. To enter click here.

The Tour provides an opportunity to sample the variety, quality, value and fun of the Divine 9 courses: Carson Valley, Dayton Valley, Genoa Lakes – Lakes and Resort, Eagle Valley East and Eagle Valley West, Empire Ranch, Silver Oak, and Sunridge.

The Divine 9 Media Tour includes a welcome reception, Monday, October 1 and the Media Tour, Tuesday, October 2, along with an awards/survival dinner celebration. The winner will receive two nights lodging at either Carson Valley Inn or Holiday Inn Express Minden and two additional post-Tour nights to recuperate, along with two rounds of golf at Divine 9 member courses (a traditional 18 holes), $150 gas allowance, and select meals.

The contest is open to anyone 21 and older. A hearty disposition and sense of humor are highly recommended. For complete rules, click here.

Football season celebrated inside the clubhouse

Monday Night Football is highlighted at Dayton Valley with a $12 all-you-can-eat appetizer themed buffet featuring food native to teams competing. A Green Bay Packer game would feature a main course with some kind of cheese, a New Orleans game, jambalaya and a Buffalo Bills game… you get the idea. The buffet also comes with 1 drink token.

Silver Oak Golf and Event Center – NFL Sunday inside the Cadillac Bar & Grill kicks off early with a hearty Sunday morning football breakfast special, a Bloody Mary bar and 50 cent tacos throughout the day. Enjoy your favorite game on one of their three flat screen TVs.

Genoa Lakes – You’ll find the Sports Club ideal for post-game drinks and appetizers. Part full-service lounge, part living room, golfers can relax in overstuffed couches and chairs, or claim a spot at the beautiful mahogany bar and enjoy college and NFL games on seven TVs throughout the weekend.

Don’t miss any of the action due to golf. At the Divine 9 golf courses you can have the best of both worlds.
